Watershed

I love “doing lunch”.  No, I mean I really LOVE it!  I’d like to think I’m an adventurous person, but alas I know better.  I tend to stick to my comfort zone…like cat hair on black pants.  I celebrated a birthday recently, the big four five.  Yay!  In honor of my birthday my friend Barb took me out to lunch.  What a treat!  We ventured into the big city of Atlanta, two suburban girls on a quest.  One way streets, detours, and wrong turns couldn’t even keep us at bay…and yes we were using a GPS.  (actually two, Sad – I know).  Anyway, once we reached our destination we were greatly rewarded.

Watershed is an amazing restaurant in Decatur, GA.  I have nothing but great things to say about this funky little American eatery.  The decor was lovely – clean, cool, and contemporary, but with a light, bright, warm, inviting vibe.  My favorite part was the collection of turquoise blue glass on display throughout the dining space.

The menu wasn’t too large to be overwhelming but it was still difficult to make a decision because everything looked SO good.  Since it was our first visit there we were offered complimentary tastes of Tomato Basil Soup.  Yes please!  It was DE-lish!

Next up we tried the Pimento Cheese.  Being a true southern gal, I’m quite the conoissuer of pimento cheese.  This one was really good, nice and sharp.  I thought the leafy celery looked so pretty on the plate.

Now for the hard part, deciding what to have for our “entrees”.  I chose the Pork Sandwich and Barb picked the Veggie Plate.  Of course we shared.  (Word to wise, if you’re ever out to eat with me be prepared to let me taste your food – ’cause that’s how I roll).

The Pork Sandwich was made with sliced roasted pork, figs (yes figs), baby greens, farm cheese, and spicy mustard on some hearty, home-made, crunchy bread.  It was crazy good!

Barb had the Veggie Plate.  Most traditional veggie plates offer a selection of three veggies with some kind of bread.  This one came as is, but boy was it yummy.  The plate had:  green beans, lima beans, fried cauliflower, stewed tomatoes, & sweet potatoes.  Each of the veggies were SO good; and the corn muffing was perfect.  It was REAL home-made cornbread, so moist it almost tasted like spoon bread.  (If you’re from Virginia you’ll know what that is).

As good as all that was…the best part was dessert, Coconut Cream Pie.  I love coconut cream pie and this one was AMAZING!  I would even go so far as to say it was the BEST coconut cream pie I have ever had.  Yep, it’s true.  We were stuffed from lunch so we decided to split dessert and I’m really glad we did because it was very large and rich.  The appearance of the pie, was that of a tart.  The crust was made out of shortbread cookies – super crisp, and buttery without being too sweet.  The custard was rich, decadent, and creamy –  just kissed with coconut flavor and bits of toasted coconut.  And the topping was a perfectly sweetened pillowy cloud of freshly whipped cream sprinkled lightly with more toasted coconut.  Yeah – I liked it, just a little!

Happy Birthday to me!

Check out that beautiful custard.

Clean plate club.

So, if you are ever near Decatur, GA I highly recommend Watershed.  Even if you’re not nearby it’s worth the drive – one way streets, wrong turns and all.  They’ve recently added an Afternoon Tea to their menu offerings…I definitely see tea time in my near future; even if I have to venture into the Big City.

*I have received no compensation from Watershed for this recommendation, just wanted to share a great find with y’all.
